Requirements Series WEBinar
Requirements
4-Part Series
Abstract: This WEBinar series
shows a 6-step process for gathering, analyzing, and
checking business requirements in a more defect free
way.
The series includes an overview of the process,
followed by detail in each of the 6 parts of the
process.
How often have you
heard, "I'll know it when I see it"?
These WEBinars
concentrate on a process model of
requirements gathering. Many of us are tired of implementing wants rather than
needs, working with opinions rather than facts, and proposed solutions
rather than real issues identified through problem identification.
Statistically, the distribution of requirements defects is
as follows: 10% extra requirements,
30% incorrect requirements, and 60% missing requirements. This
WEBinar will introduce a process to eliminate these
defects.
Requirements defects affect projects of every type:
manufacturing, building, health care, customer service, and
software. In software alone, over half of defects found
result from poor requirements.
The focus is a six (6) step
requirements gathering
process useful for end users, business
analysts, and developers. The model's structure automatically assures mission-based, needs-based requirements
that are not solutions-driven and so thorough as to not miss
any requirements. Background for the
structure, and explanation of the steps will be included.
Here is a chart that explains the phase, deliverable and
tools of each of the six steps. Join us!

Part 1: A High Quality Requirements Model
- Explains prerequisites and challenges associated
with traditional requirements gathering
- Provides an overview of the 6 step model
Part 2: Identifying Business Needs, In-Depth
- Part 1 of the model
- Identifies business needs
- Delivers user statement of requirements
- Intensively involves users of the product
- Includes 10 tools, including Mission Discovery, Existing Process Discovery,
User Process Charts, Map Translation, Problem Statement,
Ambiguity Tests, and more...
Part 3: Analyzing Business Requirements and
Constraints
- Parts 2 and 3 of the model
- Analyzes business requirements
- Delivers preliminary statement of requirements
- Involves business analysts, users, and
developers
- Confirms structural attributes of software
(quality-"ilities":
functionality, usability, reliability, supportability,
etc.) with the user
- Places the "User Concerns List" here in the process to capture user concerns
earlier rather than later
- Applies a unique RPIPR model for interviewing…
First build trust…then, gather requirements: Rapport, Process, Interview, Process, Rapport
- Allows the BA to understand true needs to avoid biasing
needs with technology
Part 4: Resolving Requirements Conflicts and
Inaccuracies
- Parts 4, 5, and 6 of the model
- Resolves conflicts, verifies, and validates
requirements
- Delivers final statement of requirements
- Understand the balance between the costs and the benefits of the new requirement
- Resolve technical conflicts between what users want and what is economically achievable with technology
- Use risk assessment to properly balance benefits with hidden costs and risks
- Balance structural software characteristics to minimize software failure
- Resolve emotional conflicts between different groups that sometimes arise
- Verify requirements with various models and measurements to prove requirements are correct
- Minimize high cost of erroneous requirements
- Prevent propagation of incorrectly installed (and otherwise correct) requirements
This WEBinar series describes how to prevent
requirements defects and how to gather those
requirements more accurately. Complete
information on the full course on requirements can be
