Process Part 1: Concepts and
Definitions
As one moves from ad hoc management of projects
steeped in blame and politics to better methods,
organizations have slowly shifted blame from people to
stabilized, but defective processes. This is a
major step.
When everyone develops products using their own
unique method, then excellence lies in the hands of a
selected few, with others to blame, and no way to improve, other than to weed out the "genetically
defective." Improvements to a process take
hold only for those few utilizing the same methods.
By consolidating best practices into organized,
stable processes, then defects in development are seen
as caused by process defects rather than people
defects. Because standardized methods are used,
often simple changes to the methods can result in
sweeping, organization-wide continuous (or even
breakthrough) improvements. This is a much
better return on quality improvement dollars.
But how does one do this? Clearly the
"engine" that targets, analyzes, builds, and
deploys processes is a process in and of itself.
