Software Testing Series

Automated Test Tools

The term "testing tool" does not automatically imply automation.  QAI has documented 30+ testing tools and 10+ testing techniques for all phases of the testing process, both general and detailed.

Some tools are not amenable to automation, such as checklists and desk checking (and are no less valuable).  Others, such as regression testing, test data and script generators, are cumbersome and error prone without automation.

The point is, whether a candidate for automation or not, all test tools are valuable in certain contexts.  Further, automated products vary widely in price, ease of use, complexity, effectiveness, and breadth of applicability.

Each attendee has valuable experience with usage of various tools, with and without automation, and using various vendors.  In a group setting, we will compare the list of conceptual tools with those that are automated, discuss those experiences, and then share the results with the larger group.

Abstract: The conceptual testing tools and techniques will be compared with available industry tools in use by the participants.

Then, in interactive format, participants will describe their usage, experience, and challenges with the particular tools in various contexts, in smaller groups.  These discussed results will be documented and shared amongst all of the attendees.

"The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency."
